Introduction

Did you know that this song is based on a poem?  The lyrics are from an early-19th-century English poem by Jane Taylor, “The Star”.   Here is the poem:

Twinkle, twinkle, little star,
How I wonder what you are!
Up above the world so high,
Like a diamond in the sky.

When the blazing sun is gone,
When he nothing shines upon,
Then you show your little light,
Twinkle, twinkle, all the night.

Then the trav’ller in the dark,
Thanks you for your tiny spark,
He could not see which way to go,
If you did not twinkle so.

In the dark blue sky you keep,
And often thro’ my curtains peep,

Introduction

Statue of Molly Malone in Dublin, Ireland

This is the unofficial anthem of Dublin, Ireland.  There is even a statue of Molly Malone in Dublin.

There is no evidence that the song is based on a real woman, of the 17th century or any other time. The name “Molly” originated as a familiar version of the names Mary and Margaret. While many such “Molly” Malones were born in Dublin over the centuries, no evidence connects any of them to the events in the song.  Nevertheless, the Dublin Millennium Commission in 1988 endorsed claims made for a Mary Malone who died on June 13,1699, and proclaimed June 13th to be “Molly Malone Day”.
