Johann Sebastian Bach is one of the most famous musicians ever. When he was alive, he was not very well known, but he worked at a church and had to write new music for every week’s service and because of that, he ended up writing a lot of music. Years after he died, his music was discovered and people realized how special his music was.
Today, most people think of Bach as one of the greatest classical composers of all time.
This song was written in something called, Notebook for Anna Magdalena, which was a book of tunes Bach wrote for his wife, Anna.
Antonín Dvořák wrote Largo as one of the movements, (that’s what the parts of a piece of classical music is called) of his New World Symphony. Dvořák was an immigrant to America and he wrote this piece to show American composers that black people’s music was a really amazing and beautiful part of the American culture. He hoped that more classical composers would use the ideas in black music in their compositions.

Edvard Grieg is best known for the incidental music he wrote for Henrik Ibsen’s play, Peer Gynt. Incidental music provides background or atmosphere for the action in a play. Peer Gynt is a tale about one man’s epic journey to the four corners of the globe. Grieg’s “In the Hall of the Mountain King” describes Peer Gynt’s adventure in the underground Kingdom of the Trolls. Can you hear the trolls creeping up on Peer? They are coming faster and faster!
