Barcarolle

Introduction

Jacques Offenbach was a German composer who lived about 150 years ago.  This piece is from his opera, Tales of Hoffman.

There are two sections in it and they are similar in rhythm, but there is a big difference in the way they are played.

See the lesson video for more info.

This is a really pretty piece and I think you’re going to love it.

Opera Arias

This is a video in which Maciek O’Shea, who is an opera singer tells you about and sings a whole bunch of operatic arias.  Aria is what a song in an opera that is sung by one person is called.  It’s a fun video and I hope you enjoy it.  Opera is one of my favorite types of music.

Andante Grazioso

Introduction

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was one of the greatest composers of all time. He is certainly one of my favorites. He started playing the piano when he was 3 just by watching his father teach his sister to play. Within a year or two he was famous and performing for kings and queens.

Mozart had a way of writing music was beautiful, serious, funny and entertaining all at the same time. The piece we are learning today sounds like a grand walk. When you listen to it, you can almost picture a king or queen walking into the room at the start, and then during the second part you can almost hear the other people in the room start to whisper and chit-chat in their excitement.

While you are listening, close your eyes a bit and imagine what might be going on while this music is playing.

Mozart is a composer you really should know about. I added a video about his life below.

All The Pretty Little Horses

Introduction

This is a beautiful lullaby.  The melody floats from low to high and smoothly flows up and down.

What kid doesn’t want a pony?

Abiyoyo

Introduction

This is a retelling of an old South African folktale.  It is the story of a little boy and his father who are ostracized by the people in their town.  That means that they didn’t let them live near them and they had to live out on the edge of town.

It was adapted from the original story by a man named Pete Seeger.  This is a common thing with folk tales. Folktales have a way of changing little by little each time they are told by different person.  In fact, it is usually expected of the storyteller to make the story their own.

Pete Seeger was a folksinger and activist who spent his life singing songs about lifting people up and demanding justice.

The illustrator of this storybook is Michael Hays, who has a website dedicated to information about Abiyoyo.  It really has some interesting stuff on their if you’re interested in checking it out.
